NIGP, NAICS & UNSPSC Code Lookup
Government and institutional buyers classify what they purchase using three different code systems. Search common NAICS codes below, and jump straight to the right official tool for NIGP or UNSPSC. New to these systems? Read our guide to the differences.
NAICS code search
Showing 33 of 33 common codes relevant to government and institutional contracting. For the complete official list, see census.gov/naics.
Official NIGP code lookup tools
NIGP Code is licensed content maintained by NIGP (via Periscope Holdings), so it isn’t freely reproducible the way NAICS is. Several state and local agencies publish their own free NIGP search tools for vendors, listed here in one place instead of scattered across dozens of procurement sites:
- Texas Comptroller NIGP Commodity Codes
- New York Thruway Authority NIGP Code Search
- Michigan DTMB Commodity Code Lookup
- City of Tampa NIGP Code Search
- City of San Antonio NIGP Code Search
- George Washington University NIGP Code Search
For background on the code itself, see NIGP’s own overview of the NIGP Code.
UNSPSC codes for UN procurement
If you're registering on UNGM or responding to UN agency tenders, the relevant system is UNSPSC, not NIGP. UNGM publishes its own official UNSPSC reference for suppliers:
UNGM: United Nations Standard Products and Services Code (UNSPSC)
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between NIGP, NAICS, and UNSPSC codes?
NAICS classifies your industry and drives things like SBA size standards and small-business certifications. NIGP is used mainly by US state and local (SLED) agencies to classify the specific commodities and services they buy. UNSPSC is a UN-maintained taxonomy used in UNGM and international procurement. A single business can hold codes in more than one system at once.
Can I look up official NIGP codes directly on this page?
This page searches a curated set of common NAICS codes directly. NIGP Code is licensed content maintained by NIGP (Periscope Holdings), so for the authoritative NIGP catalog, use one of the official state and city lookup tools linked below rather than an unofficial source.
Which code system do I need to register with?
It depends on who you're selling to. SLED agencies commonly use NIGP (sometimes alongside NAICS), UN agencies use UNSPSC on UNGM, and most SBA and federal programs key off NAICS. Many contractors end up registering codes in more than one system.
Does BidBuster match my codes against RFP requirements automatically?
Yes. Procurement codes referenced in an RFP are extracted during decoding and checked against the codes registered in your Master Profile, with crosswalk support to bridge between systems where a mapping exists.
Stop matching codes by hand for every RFP
BidBuster checks your registered codes against every RFP automatically. See SLED bid software or UNGM tender software.
